Students create film for fundraiser

Proceeds to benefit city's Boys and Girls Club

Emily Reno, an eighth-grader at Central Junior High school, was one of several area youths involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence who helped produce an independent film that will be shown Wednesday at a fundraiser. The film, “Welcome To L.A.” was shot in Lawrence. Reno was a script supervisor.

Emily Reno reviewed almost every minute of the 40 hours of footage she and her peers shot for the Lawrence-based, independent film “Welcome to L.A.”

She kept the cast in line and made sure the cameras were in the right places.

And she’s just 14 years old.

Emily and three of her peers have spent the past four months producing the film through a new mentor program with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence.

The 26-minute film was shot, directed and produced by the four club members, all age 14 or younger. They had access to industry professionals from Los Angeles and the Kansas City area and used professional equipment to produce the film.

Scott McCann, program director, screenwriter and coordinator, said the project taught the students how to lead, multitask and solve problems.

“They’re going to be able to utilize those skills the rest of their lives,” he said.

The film will debut Wednesday at Liberty Hall. The screening is at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 each.

Proceeds from the event will help the club continue the mentor program next year. For more information, call The Murphree Network at 979-1053.
