Canceled benefit run may be rescheduled

The inclement weather this weekend has forced organizers to cancel this morning’s run to raise money for a paralyzed Free State High School student.

Organizers said Friday they hope to reschedule the 5K run and 1-mile fun run to benefit Erica Smith, who suffered injuries in a one-vehicle accident in August. It was scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. today at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive.

About 250 people had signed up to run in the race, and donations had raised about $11,000 to help pay for Smith’s medical costs and other expenses, said Nora Sakumura, a race organizer and friend of the Smith family.

Anyone who has not yet picked up their race packet or T-shirt can contact race organizer Sue Reiske at mreiske@aol.com. Donations can be sent to Reiske at 1215 W. 27th St., Lawrence, KS 66046.
