Fundraiser this weekend seeks to raise funds for paralyzed Free State student
More than 200 people have signed up for a weekend run to benefit a paralyzed Free State High School student.
And plenty of spots are still available for the 8:30 a.m. 5K run at Free State, 4700 Overland Drive, to benefit Erica Smith, who suffered injuries in an August one-vehicle accident.
“When we started planning this thing, we thought spring would be a good time and more of a celebration,” said Sue Reiske, who works with Smith’s mother, Terry, at Reed Medical Group, 404 Maine.
Proceeds from the run, which also includes a 1-mile fun run at 9 a.m., will benefit The Erica Smith Fund. The fund helps cover Smith’s medical costs and other expenses, such as the wheelchair the former cross country runner uses.
Family, friends and the community have rallied around Smith, a senior who has been back at school since January.
She will attend the run, which begins and ends at the school’s south parking lot.
Registration is still open. It costs $20 for adults and $10 for students.
Forms are available online at geocities.com/runforerica.
The registration fee and forms can be dropped off during the day at Reed Medical Group through Friday. They can also be dropped into the mail slot at 1215 W. 27th St.
Registration forms can also be taken to Garry Gribble’s Running Sports, 839 Mass., from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Runners can also register beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday before the race, but the entry fee will be an extra $5.
The entry fee includes a T-shirt.
