Law enforcement personnel from the area are in Lawrence for a two-day conference put on by the International Association for Identification at the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott at 1 Riverfront Plaza. Vendors including Jerry Kramper of Forensics Source were on hand to show off some of the latest technology on Tuesday.

Dozens of law enforcement officers are investigating a crime scene at a Lawrence hotel as part of a two-day crime conference.

Officers and forensic agents from across Kansas are learning techniques on interviewing and interrogating possible suspects, and how to collect and process evidence like bloodstain patterns, biological evidence and evidence stored on computers.

The conference aims to show participants cutting-edge products and services in the forensic field.

“Law enforcement protocols are always changing and science protocols are always changing,” said John Dietrich, president of the Kansas division of the International Association for Identification.

The conference, called The First 48, revolves around a mock crime scene at the hotel, and takes participants through a complete investigation from start to finish. Tuesday’s presenters included a representative from the Kansas attorney general’s office and Dr. Erik Mitchell, coroner for Shawnee and Douglas counties.

The annual conference, which concludes today, is at the Marriott Spring Hill Suites, 1 Riverfront Plaza.
