Disabled man’s stolen wheelchair found in two pieces

Pat Helbert sits in the doorway of his apartment, in a wheelchair that he had to borrow after his motorized wheelchair was stolen on Monday.

A disabled Lawrence man’s stolen wheelchair was recovered Thursday morning in two pieces, police said.

Pat Helbert’s motorized wheelchair went missing Monday afternoon in the 2400 block of Wakarusa Drive, just south of Clinton Parkway.

Helbert had crashed it after hitting a large bump and then the wheelchair wouldn’t power up. When he returned to the scene less than an hour later, the wheelchair was gone.

Helbert, 53, said his wheelchair had been dumped near 26th and McCormick streets, in a nearby residential neighborhood, and the seat had been removed.

Lawrence police said the wheelchair was found in two pieces about 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

“The police brought it over in one piece,” said Helbert, from his Southwest Lawrence apartment.

The power cord had been pulled from the wheelchair and will need to be repaired, Helbert said.

There was an outpouring of support from the Lawrence community after 6News and the Lawrence Journal-World ran stories this week about the wheelchair theft.

Multiple residents, including Lawrence Burton, offered to give Helbert unused power wheelchairs they had.

“That just really upset me that someone would do that,” Burton said of the theft.

“The response I’ve gotten from the community has just been extraordinary, and I appreciate it,” Helbert said.

Officers are working to track down the wheelchair thieves. Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers, at 843-8477 (TIPS) or Lawrence police at 832-7509.
