Police arrest three people in connection with shots fired at vehicle

Lawrence police have arrested three people in connection with an altercation early Tuesday morning during which gunshots were fired in the 1300 block of New Jersey Street.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the 2 a.m. fight, but neighbors said that the incident was unnerving.

“I could hardly talk. I was just scared,” said Jennifer Gentry, who lives on the block and is in the process of moving.

Officers arrested a 19-year-old Lawrence woman on four counts of aggravated assault and felony criminal damage for allegedly ramming her vehicle into another one that had four people in it.

Officers also arrested a 23-year-old Lawrence man on multiple counts of aggravated assault and illegally discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Several neighbors called 911 when they heard shots.

At 7 a.m. Tuesday, police found a 20-year-old Lawrence man, identified by spokeswoman Kim Murphree as a third suspect. After an interview, detectives arrested the man on seven counts of aggravated assault.

Murphree said police determined two groups of people had an altercation before the shots were fired.

Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots and seeing people run from the scene.

Police also took two 17-year-old girls into juvenile custody under the state’s child-in-need-of-care statute.

The girls and five adults were victims in the case, Murphree said.

David Melton, a chief assistant Douglas County district attorney, said that prosecutors likely would file formal charges in the case today after receiving paperwork from investigators.
