Safe route

To the editor:

Many thanks to those in City Hall who decided to put a sidewalk on the east side of Iowa between Harvard and University. My 6-year-old goes to school on University, just east of Iowa; we live half a mile away, on the west side of Iowa. Walking or biking to school has been challenging without a sidewalk to take us from Harvard — the only safe place in the neighborhood to cross Iowa — to University.

Thanks for giving us a safe alternative to driving. I expect we’ll be using the new sidewalk just about every weekday this spring. This is an excellent example of the way pedestrian- and bike-friendly infrastructure can change behavior.

Sandy Beverly,
Lawrence

Things with wheels don't belong on sidewalks. Let the bike-friendly melee commence...

I would much rather dodge a 6 year old on the sidewalk than see a vehicle on the street dodge a 6 year old.

Right, I have no problem with bikes on the sidewalk. Is there an actual law against this? If so, then it should be changed. It is a shame that you have to take your child door to door or else risk something bad happening. But, it seems to be the nature of the world we live in.

This makes no mention of a law preventing bicycles on sidewalks. Some cities may have their own statutes for certain parts of the city. For example, I think Lawrence prohibits bikes on the sidewalks of Mass St. downtown.

The sidewalk is safest travel route on 6th Street,Iowa and 23rd.

Sorry, when FenixKS wrote, "Things with wheels don't belong on sidewalks.", I thought he was speaking from a legal point of view.
