Change of heart

To the editor:

Mere months ago, I challenged Rep. Tom Sloan for his seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. While policy differences between us were many, our most dramatic disagreement involved his support of two massive coal-fired power plants in Western Kansas.

So I was pleased to see him vote against a bill allowing the construction of these very plants. While I cannot easily explain this change of heart, I strongly believe that his constituents in the 45th District truly demanded cleaner energy despite his support for coal.

And, perhaps due to our campaign, he was forced to listen.

This is a proud moment not just for our environment, but for our democracy. The voice of the people has been heard in the chambers of the Statehouse. I sincerely hope Rep. Sloan continues to stand by his constituents — and ultimately supports Gov. Sebelius’ veto of the coal bill.

Meanwhile, our state should now turn its attention to solidifying its rightful place as a national leader in energy efficiency and alternative power generation.
