GOP slap

To the editor:

I have to admit I had mixed feelings reading Mr. Simons’ March 7 Saturday Column. I wanted to laugh out loud, but I felt sorry for him, too. I’m sure he thinks of this column as some sort of clarion call to arms, but it’s rote regurgitation of the current Republican talking points and serves only to point out why the majority of the American people have turned away from the policies of the Republican Party.

Instead of hope, they offer fear, instead of knowledge there’s only a willful ignorance of history, instead of a helping hand to those in need, they proffer a slap in the face. Mr. Simons and his right-wing colleagues apparently have nothing else to offer this country. If the last eight years taught us anything, it’s that the Republicans not only can’t manage a war, but they don’t know how to run the country, either.

Barry-

Noone has fearmongered more than Obama since he took office. The Stimulus must be passed NOW, or there will be dire consequences. (I remember a same play from Bush and the Patriot Act).

As for willful ignornace of history...the New Deal did not take us out of the Depression and was mostly overturned by 1945. World War II took us out of the Depression. Also he has fallen for the AGW religion hard. He refuses to read primary literature about the warming/CO2 relationship and wants to pass policies that will hinder this nation for years to come. He refuses to listen to what seems like every former NASA climate scientist who when they retire come out as a skeptic of AGW.

Barry, take a look at your own house before you throw stones at the opposition. There is plenty of fear mongering and willful ignorance to go around.

And this is a horrible LTE. You insult Mr. Simmons and his column without actually refuting any points made in the column. I cannot believe your letter was even printed.

Who says the New Deal didn't bring us out of the depression????? George Will, Rus Limbaugh, OMG. These guys haven't been right about anything since 1979, yet all you guys keep apeing their statements like their words were manana from heaven. Think about what you just wrote. WWII is what brought us out of the depression!!!!!!!!!!!! So to get us out of this mess we are in now we should declare war on who? China, Iran the Vatican. Come on, you can't convince me that Gov spending is bad in a financial crisis because may granpa put in WPA toilets in houses that had no indoor plumbing and he was happy for the job. The NEW DEAL worked magic in KANSAS, brought us 100 years in the future and fought back dust clouds in the 30's that would have still been blowing if not for FDR and the NEW DEAL. Haven't you seen the Grapes of Wrath?, that was real in KANSAS. So the New Deal may not have created Wall Street and Bernine Maddof but it preserved what little is left of Kansas.

Yo labmonkey - if you feel so strongly about defending the writer of the Saturday Column and his positions, perhaps it would be good to learn the correct spelling of his name.

By the way - Barry Lee is a friend of mine, and I agree with his well thought out and considered opinion.

Those who refuse to learn history will probably find a way to repeat it.
