Health board announces changes

Shirley Martin-Smith has been appointed to the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Board.

Martin-Smith was recommended by the board and was jointly appointed by the Douglas County and Lawrence City commissions.

She will replace board member and chairwoman Donna Bell in April.

A former mayor of Lawrence, Martin-Smith has served on numerous local boards including the United Way, the Douglas County Economic Development Board and the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center Governing Board.

She currently serves on the Kansas Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Community Commission on Homelessness and the board of Cottonwood Inc.

In addition to Martin-Smith’s selection this week, Dr. Gerald Pees was reappointed to the health board by the Lawrence City Commission for a second term.
