Tonganoxie boys rally past Atchison

Tonganoxie — After a first half filled with uncharacteristically wild shots, erratic passes and bad turnovers, an eight-point halftime deficit at home turned into a rout late as the Tonganoxie High boys basketball team rallied for a 62-43 victory against Atchison in a first-round sub-state matchup Monday night.

A potential nightmare turned into a stroll in the park once the Chieftains (No. 2 in their bracket) got things together in the second half and closed the third quarter with a 14-0 run against No. 7 AHS.

The Chieftains on Thursday go to Perry-Lecompton, where they will face Holton.

De Soto boys 56, Eudora 47

b Dylan Burford scored eight points in the fourth quarter, and De Soto hit eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to beat Eudora in the opening round of sub-state play.

Brendon Hudson and Mason Wedel scored 12 apiece to lead De Soto. Brian Katzfey scored 12 points, and Justin Ballock added 11 to lead the Cardinals.

Eudora ended its season at 11-10.

Perry-Lecompton boys 48, Hiawatha 34

Perry — Shane Gimzo scored 12 points to lead Perry-Lecompton to a victory in the first round of sub-state.

The Kaws (12-9) will face Basehor-Linwood on Thursday.

Kansas City Piper 57, Baldwin boys 44

Kansas City, Kan. — Brandon Tommer scored 17 points for Baldwin, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs (12-9) were defeated in the first round of the Class 4A sub-state.
