Baylor to visit for women’s Senior Night

Four years ago, Bonnie Henrickson gushed about women’s basketball signee Ivana Catic.

“She lights up a room when she walks in,” Kansas University coach Henrickson said. “People are going to love the way she plays and the flair she has about her.”

Although her KU playing career has been spotty, Catic’s outgoing, upbeat personality has never wavered. No one on the roster is quicker with a smile or a laugh.

And now the 5-foot-8 native of Serbia who came to Mount Oread from a prep school in West Virginia, will be honored on Senior Night along with fellow Serb Marija Zinic and injured guard Katie Smith.

No. 5-ranked Baylor is the foe for tonight’s regular-season home finale.

Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse. Sunflower Broadband channel 6 will carry a live telecast.

“It’s going to be really emotional for me,” Catic said. “I can’t believe it’s almost over.”

Catic is coming off her best game of the season. She scored a season-high 10 points and was charged with just one turnover during 34 minutes of duty in Saturday’s 70-57 home victory over Nebraska.

Of Catic, Nebraska coach Connie Yori said: “She played like a senior who didn’t want her career to end. She was right in tune with what coach Henrickson wanted.”

In Baylor (23-4 overall, 11-3 Big 12), Kansas will be facing a team playing its first game without its leading scorer and rebounder. Danielle Wilson, a 6-3 junior, suffered a knee injury on Saturday at Texas and won’t play tonight.

Wilson, who was averaging 15.1 points and 9.6 rebounds a game, will be replaced by 6-1 junior Morghan Medlock. Both Medlock, a transfer from USC, and Wilson are former McDonald’s All-Americans.

After tonight, the Jayhawks (16-11 overall, 5-9 Big 12) will conclude the regular season on Saturday night at No. 23 Iowa State. The Big 12 tournament will begin the following Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Chances are tonight’s game won’t be the Jayhawks’ last at home this season. Their current three-game win streak has assured a winning record and that’s virtually tantamount to a berth in the WNIT.

KU played a first-round WNIT game in Allen Fieldhouse last season, knocking off Evansville, 82-60, before going to East Lansing, Mich., and bowing to Michigan State, 58-54.
