Rollover accident on SLT in southwest Lawrence
Three men were injured, including one who was ejected from their vehicle, after a rollover accident Monday evening.
Two Lawrence men and a 16-year-old Lawrence boy were injured in a rollover accident on the South Lawrence Trafficway in southwest Lawrence around 5 p.m. Monday.
The 16-year-old, Noe Martinez, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the gold Ford Explorer. The vehicle had Nebraska tags, but the men are not from Nebraska as originally reported.
The Kansas Highway Patrol had first indicated that two of the vehicle's occupants may have been ejected, but after further investigation, KHP early Tuesday morning said that only Martinez was thrown from the vehicle. The accident led to the highway being shut down for more than an hour. The SLT was reopened to traffic shortly before 6:30 p.m.
Adolfo Remigio-Diaz, 19, who was driving the SUV, was taken via ground ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka. He was wearing a seat belt. Martinez and the other passenger, Mario Remigio-Diaz, 21, were taken to KU Hospital in Kansas City. Remigio-Diaz, who was sitting in the back of the SUV and not wearing a seat belt, was taken by a LifeNet helicopter ambulance.
Lawrence Douglas County Fire & Medical crews initially requested at least two helicopters be dispatched to the scene, but after emergency dispatchers spent several minutes searching nearby communities for emergency helicopters less than 30 minutes away, emergency crews on the scene concluded it would be quicker to transfer the other injured men via ground ambulance.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Brady Flannigan said the car was headed east on Kansas Highway 10 when it rolled over. According to the KHP report, the driver of the vehicle lost control of his SUV, causing the vehicle to roll several times before landing in the ditch.
Neither hospital had condition updates available for the victims as of early Tuesday morning.

I saw someone in the grass next to the curb on the west bound lanes of Clinton Parkway; the gold SUV was in the ditch on the other side of the fence. I hope everyone is OK.

I think the guy on 23rd was ejected and thrown over the fence from K-10. He was pretty bloody, but was moving around a bit. His legs were still over the curb, sticking out into 23rd. That had to hurt.
I thought the vehicle was a minivan, but I guess it could have been an SUV. The roof was pushed to one side and all the glass appeared to be broken out.

My husband called me right after the sheriff let them pass. He saw the SUV rolling down the hill and the guy that was ejected. He said a nurse had been driving by and pulled over and just in time as a semi was coming down the road. He did mention that the man that had been ejected had leg injuries and from the sounds of it he's lucky not to have any more severe injuries.

Drove by the accident probably minutes after it happened I was headed towards K-10 and the accident was headed towards Wakarusa. I couldn't see much of the SUV that had rolled over (just the top of the roof) but on my side of the median there was a young boy, probably late teens or early 20s, that looked like he had been thrown from the vehicle. He was obviously thrown a great distance because he was almost on the road on my side and the car was on the other side of a fence. Luckily, it seems a nurse (at least someone in scrubs) had pulled over and she and another pedestrian were trying to keep the boy calm since the ambulances had yet to arrive. I didn't see the other two accident victims. The young man that I saw looked to be in pain but was moving around. I hope everyone turns out to be OK, it seemed to be a pretty severe wreck.

This is from the LMH website:
“LMH continues to be a community-owned, not-for-profit hospital that serves the health care needs of the community regardless of an individual's ability to pay. LMH receives no tax support from the city of Lawrence or Douglas County. Dedicated to improving the health of the community, LMH invests all excess revenues in services, equipment and facilities which further that mission.”

boy, I sure do hope they finish the SLT soon. clearly it's one of the safer roads in Lawrence—and doubling the traffic on it should do nothing but improve its record. (I hope the next step will be to remove that annoying concrete barrier on the turnpike. I really like that “open lane” feel…)

Here we go again, everyone talking about how dangerous this road is… by the pictures you can tell that this happened on a straightaway. We all know how dangerous straight roads can be.
This looks like a bit of driver error mixed with a possible mechanical malfunction (tire blew or something).
Hope they're ok. Probably would have helped in the Joe Cools were wearing a seatbelt.

It's nice to see all these people that drove by the crash were making phone calls instead of stopping to help the victims. For all you know there may have been 5 people out there laying in that grass. I suppose that dental hygienist in scrubs is well equipped to handle that by herself. I guess civic duty stops at calling 911 anymore. Remember the days before cell phones? People would actually stop to help.

Ironic someone using the name conservative seems to think spending money on enlarging a road when there is no money is ok. We wouldn't want to start with personal responsibility issues like driving skills, vehicle inspections, and banning vehicles that have been notorious for roll overs. Sure you drive the vehicle of your choice and when it rolls from combination of the above society has to spend millions making the roads larger.

LA_ex…as a trained first responder I will let you know that if every one of those people that drove by stopped it would have caused more problems. Not only would we have had more people stopped on a highway but several untrained individuals would have attending the scene and possibly making things worse. Don't know how much u pay attention to the news but a woman sued a co-worker for pulling her out of a burning car not to long ago because he could have worsened her injuries. its better that the individuals call for help then try and attend to someone with a possible neck, head, or back injuries.

No matter how safe you build a road, there will still be terrible drivers on them and that means accidents. The unexpected can always happen as well.
I was getting on K10 last evening coming up from Reiner* Rd and as I was about to merge on, a car in close proximity to mine had a tire blow. The car swerved to the right violently. I'm happy I was aware of my surroundings, wearing a seatbelt, and not on my damn phone.

What is astonishing is we have no problem with the government building, rebuilding, building yet again beside what already was built, billions of dollars spent every year and yet don't think the same government should set requirements for vehicles running on those roads for instance, taking that particular suv completely off the road since it is notorious for just there kind of accidents. The fear that these vehicles becoming the cheap vehicle and more likely more younger and inexperienced drivers behind the wheel and having serious accidents is obviously apparent in this accident.

Emily that isn't quite right.
To finish my thought, we spend all those billions on the roads yet won't require anything of the drivers or the vehicles to make them safe so society can then spend billions on fire and medical crews that spend most their time responding to vehicle accidents, the long term health issues of those maimed in accidents, and expense of repairing those vehicles. It is interesting the requirements to fly are so strict especially since they are so spaced out and I'm talking about more than just the essentials of knowing how a plane works and weather, and yet a kid that learns how to parallel parks and watches a video on the dangers of driving is qualified to drive at high speeds and even allowed to drive a vehicle notarious for overturning from minor corrections before a kid has enough experience just learning how to drive a regular car.

Yep, it's always the fault of the road and not the driver. What a lame excuse for those not wanting the SLT. Hate to admit it, but I use it to head to south Lawrence in lieu of Wakarusa, Clinton Prkwy, south Kasold and Iowa where it seems a lot of the drivers are going as fast as those on the SLT but they're driving safer in town, making all those important phone calls while driving 10 to 15 over the speed limit in heavy traffic.
Hope all the young men injured in this accident make a full and speedy recovery.

OeraLinda - do your family members and friends in OP understand the difference between yellow and white lines on the road? Pretty sad if a road has to be explained to people. If you don't understand road markings, you shouldn't be driving. And if you see a car coming head on, you should get the clue you can't pass and that the other lane of traffic is going the other way.
You say it is unfinished, but the road itself isn't. The rest of the SLT was never completed.

Thanks OeraLinda, it is great when someone comes on to make my points for me. Now can we talk about educating drivers as being more important than just spending more on building roads? I'm not quite sure what you mean by the road being unfinished.

But it is just like every other two lane road that requires a basic understanding of how a road works. Should we divide all roads to avoid that? There have been a number of drift over accidents on that road, quite a few defy reason so are we going to spend millions to protect us from ourselves and not expect anything more from the individual drivers? One has to wonder why the first thing that isn't done is lower the speed limit. From the first day that road was open it was obvious 65 mph is way to fast, especially since there is a traffic light out in the middle of it all. Please, let's start with common sense and not assume millions of additional dollars will continue to protect us from ourselves.

Before even thinking of adding more SLT this section should be finished off as 4 lane. Not that this would have prevented the accident.
Then when the I-70 connector is finished in Leavenworth county bingo we have before us a bypass.
. This concept accomplishes many things.
It services:
• Johnson and Douglas county traffic going to northwest Lawrence or Topeka. Or Topeka going to JOCO.
• the Eudora Business Park east of 1057.
• East Hills Business Park and the southeast Lawrence industrial park.
• the Lawrence airport.
And it:
• diverts traffic around the city.
• keeps the SLT out of the wetlands.
• reduces congestion for morning and afternoon commuters.
• might save Douglas County taxpayers millions of dollars.
• Eliminates use of tax dollars.
• Eliminates the need for an eastern bypass
* Would not dump fast moving traffic off uncomfortably close to the congested city limits
• allows KTA fees to pay for the highway and maintenance.
No need for the SLT thus saving local taxpayers tons of money.
It is my understanding that if the SLT were built 23rd street becomes 23rd street = no longer highway 10 = no more state tax dollars for that section = MORE tax dollars from Lawrence tax payers.

JackRipper~ You totally missed Emily's joke.
kmat~ Exactly!
Hope these people have a full recovery and the young man who was coptered out will get a second chance to start wearing seatbelts. They can't prevent all deaths or injuries in a crash, but the statistics speak volumes. Almost all ejections happen to those who are not belted in. And if you're ejected—through a window, often as not—your chances of surviving are diminished.
