Emergency workers hope to drive up blood donations

Local emergency workers will be battling for your blood next week.

People donating blood at the Lawrence Community Blood Center, 1410 Kasold Drive, can vote for their favorite public safety agency. The drive will be Monday through June 27.

Lawrence police, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, Douglas County Jail and Douglas County sheriff’s office workers are participating in a friendly competition to see who can collect the most pints of blood. They’ll be fighting for bragging rights and a trophy.

Appointments to donate blood can be made by calling 843-5383, or online at savealifenow.org. The blood center is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday; and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Walk-ins are also accepted.

Organizers said 99 percent of blood donated during the drive will stay in the community and be used to save lives at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The sheriff’s office won last year’s Battle for Blood competition.
