City to consider road projects near Oread Inn

City commissioners at their meeting tonight will be asked to spend $90,000 to make several street and sidewalk improvements around the Oread hotel project.

Members of the city’s Public Works Department are recommending that the city undertake several street and sidewalk repairs in the area near the project, which is being built near 12th and Indiana streets.

The street work wasn’t originally required as part of the approval process for the hotel development, said Mark Thiel, the city’s assistant director of public works. But Thiel said it became obvious that the city could benefit from using construction crews that already are in the area to repair other streets and sidewalks that have low pavement scores.

“We decided it would make sense to do it now rather than later,” he said.

Thiel said his department approached the developer about sharing the costs for several of the projects. The projects up for approval by the city are:

• Replacement of Indiana Street from 12th to 11th Street. The city would pay $50,000. The development group — which includes members of the Fritzel family and local businessman Todd Sutherland — would pay $275,282.

• Replacement of the intersection of 11th and Indiana streets. The city would pay $30,000. The developers would pay $36,199.

• Various improvements on sidewalks along Mississippi Street. The city would pay the entire $10,000 in project costs.

Also, the city’s Utilities Department is seeking approval to spend $44,070 on a sewer line along Indiana Street near 11th Street.

Commissioners meet at 6:35 p.m. today at City Hall.

The city proposes to take $90,000 from its already approved street maintenance fund to pay for the road and sidewalk projects. The Utilities Department would use money that it sets aside each year for such repairs.

In other Oread news, Thiel said the developers have told the city that the main part of the hotel structure should be completed by August, allowing crews to begin work on the interior and the final exterior phases of the building.
