Area drainage projects absorb stimulus funds
An economic stimulus program is channeling money into 15 drainage-improvement projects throughout the state, including Kansas University’s West Campus and in Bonner Springs and Shawnee.
Among projects selected by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to share in $7.7 million in federal financing:
• $170,000 to utilize “vegetated swales, bioretention cells and native landscaping” on KU’s West Campus. Primary goal: “green stormwater management and preserved natural space.”
• $469,125 to “comprehensively employ bioswales, bioretention, rain gardens and native vegetation to manage stormwater runoff” in Shawnee.
• $127,095 to employ “bio-engineered streambank stabilization to mitigate erosion along Spring Creek” in a park in Bonner Springs.
