Bomb technicians say bottle found in Eudora mailbox contained ingredients for explosive device
The Olathe bomb squad detonated a bottle filled with a hazardous substance after it was found Thursday afternoon in a mailbox in Eudora.
Emergency crews responded to the call at 14th and Fir streets about 2:30 p.m.
Eudora Police Chief Greg Dahlem said a plastic Dr Pepper bottle filled with a green liquid was placed in the mailbox. The mailbox was located at the street, not on the home.
The residents of the house, a middle school and high school teacher, were not home during the incident.
Officials removed the bottle from the mailbox and sealed it in a five-gallon container.
Just before 5 p.m., a small explosion, sounding like a cap gun, could be heard.
Bomb technicians on the scene later identified the mixture in the two-liter bottle as a combination of Liquid Drano and aluminum foil, which can be used to make an explosive device.
The incident is still under investigation.
