Lemonade sales raise cancer research funds

More than 700 volunteers, including young cancer survivors and their families, will be selling lemonade from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Hy-Vee stores to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

The effort is part of a larger organization called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. The organization began when Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a young cancer patient, opened a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for cancer. After her death, her parents and supporters continued to raise money by selling lemonade and accepting donations.

The Kansas City regional effort, called a “Grand Stand,” is the second largest Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser in the United States and has raised more than $315,000 since 2004. Proceeds have gone to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., and the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Organizers hope to raise $95,000 from this year’s event.
