Action delayed on Human Relations office

Commissioners took no final action on whether to eliminate funding for the city’s Human Relations Division.

City Manager David Corliss’ recommended budget eliminates about $170,000 in funding for the two remaining positions in the city’s Human Relations Division, which investigates complaints of workplace and housing discrimination.

Commissioners did hear from two members of the public — the Revs. William Dulin and Leo Barbee — who said eliminating the department would weaken the voice of those who face discrimination.

Corliss is proposing that the city continue to locally enforce complaints of discrimination, but believes that attorneys in the city prosecutor’s office can more efficiently investigate the complaints.

Commissioners likely will discuss the issue again at their Aug. 11 meeting.
