West tops East in Shrine Bowl, 14-7

? The West defeated the East, 14-7, in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday at Cessna Stadium.

Hutchinson’s Nate Dreiling was named the West MVP, while Topeka Hayden’s T.J. McGreevy was named the East MVP in the all-star football showcase.

Free State’s Chucky Hunter played for the East, while the Firebirds’ Brett Oberzan was the defensive coordinator. Free State’s Grahm Saunders was also named to the East squad, but didn’t participate because of another commitment.

The West squad was ahead, 14-7, at halftime, and the teams went scoreless in the second half.

The West has now won the past four Shrine Bowls: 29-28 in 2008 (Emporia), 26-7 in 2007 (Hays) and 10-9 in 2006 (Pittsburg).

The East last won, 17-10, in 2005 in Manhattan.
