Sylvia Maack, Lawrence, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship Fund. Maack was sponsored by the Lawrence chapter, Beta Mu.

Recipients are chosen based on their scholastic standing, as well as, community involvement, letters of recommendation and an essay detailing their future goals.


Brett H. Myrick, son of Jeff Myrick and Annette Galluzzi, Baldwin City, was among the 550 students to graduate from Harvard Law School on June 4.

Myrick is a 2002 graduate of Baldwin High School and a 2006 graduate of Drake University.


The family of Norman Bartlett, Lawrence, will celebrate his 85th birthday with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Babcock Place, 1700 Mass.


Brent and Allison Carnagie, Eudora, announce the birth of a son, Houstyn Monroe Carnagie, June 19, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

His grandparents are Dale and Susan Carnagie, Eudora, and Richard and Regina Sanders, Lawrence. His great-grandparents are Norman and Darlene Musick and Ellen Carnagie, all of Eudora, and Dr. Richard and Wanda Sanders, Kaufman, Texas.


Johanna Mehl, a Lawrence sophomore, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, by earning a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher.

Mehl, a graduate of Free State High School, was also named a Visionary Woman Scholar for 2008. She has participated in several community ballet performances, statewide honor orchestra, and Model United Nations.


Keith and Laura Gilliland, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Sophie Grace Gilliland, May 28, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Sophie has a sister, Marianna, 7.

Her maternal grandparents are Becky and George Smallwood, and paternal grandparents are Gary and Judy Gilliland, all of Lawrence. Her great-grandmothers are Letha Mae Gilliland, Lawrence; Virginia Smallwood, Phoenix; and Bobbie Anne Humphreys, Chattanooga, Tenn. Her great-great-grandmother is Marie Humphreys of Alabama.


Members of the Davenport family met June 13 at Centennial Park to visit several cemeteries including Oak Hill, Maple Grove, Reno, Mt. Sidney and Villa Eden. The family would all like to thank the Basehor Cub Scout Troop for cleaning up the Villa Eden Cemetery and putting up a barbed wire fence.

The James Madison Davenport reunion was held June 14 at Centennial Park. The event included a potluck; pictures and stories were also shared. Cloviss Winklelman Curtiss showed the family a tintype picture of their great-great-grandfather James Madison Davenport. Local residents attending the event were: Sarah Newman, Jim and Marilyn Weeks, Lee A. and Tyffane Shoemate, and the late Richard A. Davenport, Lawrence; Robert Skeet and his wife, Tonganoxie; Kathy, Miguel, Jesse, Julian and Miranda Morado, Bonner Springs; Howard, Marvin and Myrtle Jones, Linwood; Gary and Roxy Taylor, Baldwin City; Marc, Brandy, Avry and Aubree Coons, Ottawa; Phyllis Evans, Tecumseh; Corina, Chris and Logan Dezasher, Ethan Elston, Gavin and Vernon Weeks, Eudora; and Leslie and Nancy Weeks, LeLoup.
