The Salvation Army in Lawrence is accepting financial donations to help provide elementary school children with new shoes when classes start in August.

The organization aims to distribute shoes for 75 children in need during a picnic at noon Aug. 11 at The Salvation Army Corps and Community Center, 946 N.H.

The Salvation Army is also accepting applications from families in need who might qualify for help through the Back to School Shoe Drive. Children in need of shoes must be in kindergarten through sixth grade. Parents must provide proof of income and address, a Social Security card and an end of year report card for each child. July 30 is the deadline to apply at the community center.

The Salvation Army is seeking the donations to purchase shoes of the proper size for each child. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Salvation Army, 946 N.H., Lawrence, KS 66044.
