Washington Former longtime Sen. Bob Dole is home from the hospital celebrating his 86th birthday after undergoing leg surgeries.
Dole said Wednesday he’s being showered with sweets, balloons, gifts and some homemade soup from his daughter as he recovers in his Washington home. He was released Tuesday evening from Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dole says doctors performed surgeries for ulcers that had attacked the skin on his legs. A skin graft also was done on his left leg.
Dole says he was buoyed by the calls he received from former presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and George Bush while hospitalized.
Dole served as Senate majority leader, was a vice presidential candidate in 1976, presidential candidate in 1988, and the Republican presidential nominee in 1996.

Good luck Senator. Glad you are back home. Get out on the road soon and talk some sense into your colleagues. We could use more statesmen like you were in the senate. Sam's leaving. Want to run again?
