Sometimes almost everything goes right, and that’s what happened Saturday in downtown Lawrence, when thousands converged for hometown food, live music, great bike races, and semi-obscured fireworks (those pesky trees!).

Overall, with the weather cooperating, things seemed to fall into place. But of course, it takes a lot of organization for things to work well, and lots of congratulations are in order. In particular, the “Give Back” participants not only provided excellent food, but also gave $500 each to help fund the fireworks. And “Give Back” coordinator Constance Novosel helped pull all the pieces together with energy and optimism. Let’s hope for a repeat in 2010.
