Fireworks fines

To the editor:

A recent story in the Journal-World stated that fines for shooting fireworks in Lawrence range from $100 to $200. After witnessing all of the fireworks in the city limits of Lawrence Saturday night, I feel that some of the financial budget shortcoming could be lessened if the city would call in all the off-duty city police officers for the Fourth of July evening, pay them the overtime they deserve and, at $200 per ticket with a minimum of three tickets per hour per patrolman, the city could reap thousands of dollars after paying the salaries of the on-duty police officer.
