Job opportunity

To the editor:
We have recently discovered a great program, called Heartland Works, which places qualifying youth in jobs in the community. The wages and payroll taxes are covered entirely by this program, which, as we understand it, has extra funding this summer from the economic stimulus funds given by the federal government. Blue Plate Dinners is fortunate to have three hard-working employees support our operations this summer. They’ve shown up on time (if not early!), ready to contribute, and learn valuable job skills.
We’ve been told there are 70 kids who want (and in many cases, need) jobs this summer and not nearly enough placements available. We encourage other businesses in town to check out this win-win opportunity. With the annual summer slowdown that is practically a guarantee for Lawrence businesses, this couldn’t come at a better time. Why not give a young person an opportunity, while at the same time helping your business’ bottom line?

So let me get this straight:
Businesses benefit
Young persons benefit
Taxpayers lose

You lose unless you are willing and able to put these kids to work…

It must be nice taxpayers are paying for these kids to work and the businesses get the additional people but they do no thave to pay for it. The Looney left calls the republicans the ones who are only looking out for the businesses!! It is kinda funny.

If kids get a marketable skill now though, they will become productive members of society. I'm guessing they are lower income kids. Maybe by showing them they can do something productive will show them they don't have to live on welfare all their lives, and that a job is the better way to go.

What a great idea! Businesses can hire people that don't cost them any money and lay off people that do, saving them money during the “annual summer slowdown.”
