Accident at 6th and Michigan diverts traffic
A downed light post near the intersection of Sixth and Michigan Streets caused traffic delays Friday evening.

A 43-year-old Lawrence woman was arrested Friday evening on charges of operating under the influence, reckless driving and driving without insurance after an accident that knocked down two utility poles near 6th and Michigan streets.
Lawrence police said the woman’s car, a Volvo, struck and dislodged one pole, causing another pole to snap and fall into 6th Street.
Traffic was diverted to Michigan and Maine streets for more than two hours.
The woman was booked at 7:42 p.m.

My girlfriend was actually the car behind this lady at McDonalds. She apparently couldn't pay for 3 meals at McD's, yelled at the clerk and sped off and hit a curb, rebounded and hit another curb and smashed into the pole. My GF called 911 along with many other people. Finding out she was drunk only makes sense. It's kind of scary thinking about her or the falling poles hurting someone though. Kind of funny that she was angry she couldn't pay for 3 McD's meals and ended up costing her thousands!

People seem to be abusing the privilege to drive more and more. About 10 minutes ago even, as I was just entering the intersection of 23rd and Iowa, a *$&$&*ing car blew across the intersection at 55-65mph, almost T-boning me. I hate people that run lights that just turn red, but this light must have been red for at least a minute or two. WTF people?

xbusguy, not sure what you're drinking. My choice is Blvd Wheat, a 12 pk is $12.99 or $.09 per oz. Cheapest beer I've seen is Hamms at $4.99 per 12 pk or $.035 per oz.
For gas at same per oz cost, price would have to be $4.43 to $11.52 per gal.

Volvo is one of those cars associated with liberals, like GM and Chrysler are becoming now.

I noticed there was a bird's nest that was destroyed in the accident. I wonder if the lady downtown that complained about the gigantic robin with invisible baby birds losing its nest will report this one to the governor? I'm surprised the reporter didn't take notice about this bird's nest and if said bird is migratory. That in itself is a story in this town. hmmmmm.
Was the driver drinking or smoking pot? I notice the car is a Volvo. I'm leaning dope smoker.

Which came first..the drinking and driving or the need to drive a safely built Volvo? Perhaps the Volvo isn't her first vehicle. Maybe hubby is doing what he can if he can't keep her from the bottle. Tough situation. Just a thought.

Prune~ As usual, you have no idea what you're talking about. Had this person been smoking pot, she very likely would not have screamed at the McD's clerk, much less peeled out and crashed her car. Very much belligerent drunk rather than pothead behavior.

My own assessment of them is not that they have an anticonservative device, but that buyers have to sign an agreement that they will always drive at least 10 mph under the speed limit, use their turn signal ONLY when halfway into their turns, and always park ON yellow lines, rather than between them.
Oh, and arrogantly pull out in front of ongoing traffic, assuming everyone will brake for them, since hitting them would be like hitting a washing machine—which, by the way, is what most of them look like.

though I oppose use of pot, I must agree with posters above, if this wench had been on pot, no yelling at the MCD crew, probably would've had trouble getting the car outa the parking lot, remembering why she was there, etc. so, pot *could* have prevented *this* accident.
