Rod Kutemeier, Sunflower Broadband’s general manager, will chat with readers about the upcoming transition from analog to digital television broadcasting at 1:30 p.m. Friday on LJWorld.com.

House Republicans this week defeated a bill to postpone the digital transition to June 12 — leaving an estimated 6.5 million U.S. households unprepared for the currently scheduled Feb. 17 switchover.

Unprepared my rear-end. People have known the date was coming for years and years. Lazy is more like it.

Sounds like they (households) need a bailout. Free cable for all!

Tell Sunflower if they don't cut out their new, and very annoying, pop-up ads, they will have at least one former user of this site.

bozo-Where are you talking about pop-ups?Jonathan KealingOnline editor

Publishers Clearing House-- They only come up on this site.

bozo-Are they pop-ups or pop-unders? We've talked about the latter — but I didn't think we'd gone forward yet. We definitely shouldn't have any pop-ups. Let me try and ask around.Jonathan KealingOnline editor

OMG! What are people going to do if they have to go without tv for a few days because they didn't prepare? We've only received notices in our cable bill for the last several months at least! Here's some ideas:-watch a movie, if you HAVE to watch something (@ no cost from the library, or borrow a friend's or neighbor's)-read a book (free at the library -- you can even do it there, preventing use of your own lights, heat, and bathroom)-play a cardgame or boardgame (free if you own these already)-do a crossword or wordsearch (the dollar tree has books of them for a $1)-take a nap (aren't we all a little sleep deprived?)-excercise instead (increases energy and decreases health expenses later on)-play with your dog/cat or other pet if you have one (also costs nothing and amuses the both of you)-volunteer somewhere (in these difficult economic times, I'm sure there are numerous volunteer oportunities)-get some of your indoor spring cleaning out of the way early (allowing you to spend less time inside when the weather becomes nice)-get in touch with someone you haven't talked to in a while (friends and family usually appreciate phone calls, e-mails, or a letter/card and who knows, maybe they'll put you in the will)-give a little attention to your indoor plants (prune the dead stuff off, give them some warm water to encourage growth, repot overgrown containers) or get some (they increase oxygen and improve the way your home smells)-find a hobby (increases creativity and overall sense of well-being)-discontinue using your tv (save money in energy AND the monthly bill if you subscribe to any services)-recyle your cans and other metal waste (they pay you for it! Maybe you can buy a converter with the money ... recycling in general helps us keep more resources in reserve for the future)

"Are they pop-ups or pop-unders? We've talked about the latter"I guess they would be the latter, but they pop up continually-- faster than I can click them off the screen without that becoming my primary activity. Three of them popped up in the time it took to post this.

That sounds like a virus, because I can't get any pop-ups or under to show. And I know we wouldn't ever do anything like that. Have you run an anti-virus scan lately?Jonathan KealingOnline editor

Also, I've been going through numerous websites, and these only come up on this site.

Switched to firefox, and the ads have stopped. So the problem is with Safari.

I am on Firefox on both Linux and Winders and also got the ad today from this site. Jonathan, I would check with your Admins and ask them to check to see that your site has not been compromised. For instance your site put a cookie on my machine for "americanprogress.org"Name: __utmzContent: 112534036.1232462644.1.1.utmcsr=www2.ljworld.com|utmccn=(referral)|utmcmd=referral|utmcct=/news/2009/jan/19/unaffordable-mortgages-are-becoming-burden-minorit/Domain:.americanprogress.orgPath: /Send For: Any type of connectionExpires: Tuesday, July 21, 2009 9:44:04 PM Is this intentional or is it possible your site has been compromised, either internally or externally, by some "hackivist" at americanprogress?

You need to try to visit this site on Safari. The pop-under ads "pop up" very quickly. Generally 2 or 3 (of the same ad!) show up just visiting this page. From your comments, this sounds like a new program Sunflower/LJW is using. Here's my response: I will cease to visit the site entirely if you insist upon utilizing this offensive type of advertising. I don't mind ads in line in the pages, that is fine...but any pop-unders are going to chase me away for good.

"Rod Kutemeier, Sunflower Broadband’s general manager, will chat with readers about the upcoming transition from analog to digital television broadcasting at 1:30 p.m. Friday on LJWorld.com."As this change affects "over the air broadcasters," and Sunflower Braodband is merely a rebroadcaster of others signals, it in no way impacts Sunflower Broadband or its customers (aside from KTKA), There is no a technical or legal reason why Sunflower Broadband couldn't continue to provide analog channels they currently provide. I always find it "odd" that these articles and chats are never prefaced with "Sunflower Broadband is owned by the World Company who also owns the Lawrence Journal World" to warn readers that what you read is "possibly" little more than a biased infomercial in the guise of "news interview."

The journalism on this site is little more than a propaganda for "touting" progressive causes, Downtown Lawrence, Inc., propping up Sunflower Broadband, and presenting a squeaky clean image of Lawrence so that parents feel comfortable sending their kids to KU and very little else.

I found a solution for the pop-ups...not sure how long it will last, but it is working for now. Basically, you need to go into your cookies database and delete all cookies from zedo.com. In Safari you can go to Preferences/Security and search for zedo.com and delete them. Not sure how it works in other browsers, but I imagine they all have a similar facility.Once I did this, the pop-ups stopped appearing...for now, at least :-)But, users shouldn't have to do this. The LJworld webmasters should not be using this sleazy method of advertising in the first place!

Thats_messed_up 5 years, 11 months ago

anyone switch to DirectTV lately? If so I'd love to hear how it is. I'm considering switching.

cowboy 5 years, 11 months ago

zedo is spyware , you should be able to find free downloads to get rid of it , spybot for windows works , if you use adblock you can get rid of all the annoying ads also

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 5 years, 11 months ago

I deleted the cookies from zedo, and so far that seems to have solved the problem. Thanks kuhusker.I have adblock on firefox, but not on Safari (not sure if it's available.)

Typo in headline LJWorld, the second one I've seen tonight! *the house republicans can't defeat anything, they don't have a majority in the house. who wrote that biased drivel! no wonder we think the media is biased! so now how many people read that and go away cursing the house republicans?
