Service lauded

To the editor:

The obituary of William A. Taggart in the Jan. 19 issue did not include some important information about his association with this city of Lawrence.

William Taggart was the publisher and editor of the Lawrence Outlook, a weekly newspaper, following World War II until into the 1960s. The Outlook had been known as the Douglas County Republican, edited by Ed Abels from the 1920s until World War II.

Bill Taggart was elected post commander of Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, the American Legion, and served in that capacity in 1962-63. He was instrumental in building the post’s first post home at Sixth and Lawrence Avenue in 1963. He had been active in the American Legion in Wichita before moving to Lawrence after World War II. Even during his work in Washington, he kept in close contact with Post 14 from his home in Arlington, Va., and with telephone calls and personal visits. Bill was a large man, about 6 feet 4 inches tall, with a weight to match. Whenever he took on a project, he matched his size with an equal amount of effort.

Those of us who knew him and served with him in community projects will miss his friendship and boundless energy.

Alan C. Fisher,
