Jayhawk women tripped up

Danielle McCray rebounded from a cold streak to score a career-high 30 in KU's loss to Nebraska.

January 22, 2009

— Kansas University junior Danielle McCray scored a career-high 30 points in the Jayhawks’ 67-58 women’s basketball loss to Nebraska on Wednesday in Devaney Center.

Krysten Boogaard scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks, who fell to 12-5 overall, 1-3 in Big 12 play. NU is 10-7, 1-3.

McCray and Boogaard finished with 48 points, the rest of the Jayhawks 10. McCray also had eight rebounds.

NU, which trailed 33-32 at halftime, rolled 15-3 to start the final half. McCray scored 17 of her 30 points in the second half.

KU hit 24 of 47 shots for 51.1 percent to NU’s 42.6 percent mark. KU also outrebounded the Cornhuskers, 35-27, but was hurt by turnovers as NU converted 22 Jayhawk miscues into 20 points, eight of which came off fastbreaks.

Aw c'mon! Beat by a 9-7 squad? And one player accounts for more than half the points? Is this due to injuries?

Yes, injuries - Freshman guard Angel Goodrich tore her ACL in October and is out for the season; Senior guard Katie Smith is also out with a knee injury; and Junior guard Sade Morris suffered a concussion last weekend and could not play last night. Plus, Sophomore Chakeitha Weldon, another guard, left the team in September for personal reasons. During the first half, it was a close game - KU led 33-32 at half time - but a 15 to 3 run at the beginning of the second half doomed us. If you had read the entire article you would know that we shot over 50% while NU shot under 50% and we out-rebounded them, but 20 points scored off of 22 KU turnovers pretty much did us in. The 12-5 record doesn't look that bad, but now we have to play conference games, and 6 of the teams from our conference are ranked in the Top 25, 3 of them in the top 10. We need to share the love that we have for our men's team with this team - they are trying really hard to win. We are playing K-State at home on Saturday - we need to fill the seats and cheer them on! Go HAWKS!

I wish I had gone to more women's games when I was at KU. They do need the support.
