Free State boys fall to SM East

SM East boys 66, Free State 55

With six minutes remaining, SM East (6-2) led, 52-25, and appeared well on its way to a blowout victory. Then the Firebirds suddenly came to life.

After managing just 25 points in the first 26 minutes, FSHS erupted for 30 points in the last six. At one point, the Firebirds cut the Lancers’ 27-point lead to eight.

“I think we may have found some things,” Free State coach Chuck Law said. “I feel really good how we played in those last six minutes.

Soph Eric Watson scored 11 of his team-high 15 points during that late sizz. Connor Monarez contributed seven points and Nick Hassig six. Also on the floor during most of that span were reserves Douglas Compton and Ryan Scott.

“That bunch played together, spread the floor and made an attempt to guard somebody,” Law said. “We haven’t seen that all season.”

Friday’s loss was the Firebirds’ eighth straight since they spilled Valley Center in the season opener. Next for Free State is the McPherson Invitational.

The Firebirds (1-8) will meet the unbeaten host Bullpups in a first-round game on Thursday.

“We’re going to change some things,” Law said. “We’ve lost eight straight. We don’t have any choice.”
