Salvation Army campaign a success

The Lawrence Salvation Army surpassed its 2008 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign goal for the first time in years.

The campaign’s goal was $100,000 and $103,601 was raised. In 2007 the campaign raised $96,000.

“We are pleased that the community has supported our work,” said Capt. Wes Dalberg, the local commander. “We wholeheartedly thank the community for their time and generosity.”

The poor economy has increased the need for the Salvation Army’s services and Dalberg said the group was concerned the community would not be able to give as much this year.

Dalberg noted that the army was able to distribute 200 Thanksgiving baskets and 3,000 coats thanks to Scotch Dry Cleaner’s campaign. In addition, 120 families were part of the Adopt a Family Program. A total of 320 families with 650 children received toys through collaborative efforts of the Salvation Army and the Toys for Tots program.

Contributions are still accepted and the need for services will continue, Dalberg said. Checks can be mailed to 946 N.H., 66044, or you can call 843-4188 for more information.
