Green Lawrence
To the editor:
OK, here we go into 2009. So what have we accomplished in 2008 here in Larry? Lots of things, but we’ve still got a long way to go. Need a new chancellor. Need street upgrades. Need a new library, or roof. Need new business.
Anybody paying attention to what’s going on in Greensburg? Lawrence needs to catch up or wake up. Mike and Sue and the rest of you down there (City Hall) do a great job, but who’s watching out for the future? We need to take the baton from Greensburg and get back in the race. Let’s turn Lawrence green. Roundabouts can take a back seat.
Let’s plant, and let’s start with business entities that don’t comply with their original site plan filings, i.e., the AT&T cell tower in the 700 block of Vermont. It sticks out like a sore thumb or ugly Betty. Where’s the landscaping? Johnny Appleseed, we need you. Take a look at Channel 6 in the middle of the night. You can see the tower, towering above downtown Lawrence without a light on it. Think Plaza lights. Bah, humbug. It should have never been built in the first place. I think it’s time for it to go. What they’ve saved in landscaping over the years, they can use to tear down the tower, recycle the bricks and pay some church “dollars” to hide their satellite dishes. Everybody wins.
Go green! Go Jayhawks!
Dennis Barritt,
Lawrence
