Sub-state hoops brackets set
Free State girls host LHS girls in Rd. 1 on Thursday
After splitting the regular season series, one game apiece, the Lawrence High and Free State High girls basketball teams will get a chance to break the tie at sub-state.
Free State (11-9), which knocked off LHS (9-11), 47-42, last Friday night in the regular-season finale, earned the No. 4 seed and will play host to the fifth-seeded Lions at 7 Thursday, with the winner moving on to Saturday, where a chance to go to state will be on the line.
LHS won the first meeting between these two teams, 39-37, back in December.
On the boys side of the bracket, Lawrence High (12-8) — winners of six straight — earned the No. 3 seed and will play host to Shawnee Mission West (9-11) at 7 on Wednesday at LHS.
Free State (1-19), meanwhile, takes the No. 8 seed and a 19-game losing streak into a first-round match-up at top seed Shawnee Mission Northwest (16-4), also at 7 on Wednesday.
Should either of the city’s boys teams win on Wednesday, they would advance to Friday’s sub-state finals but would not play each other.
All sub-state finals will be played at FSHS.
