Wheel Genius: Road work this week

The federal stimulus money hasn’t even started rolling in yet, and there’s still plenty of road work to get in your way as you travel during the coming week.

Here’s a rundown:

Lawrence

• Work continues to add turn lanes for access into Bauer Farms, along the north side of Sixth Street and south of Free State High School. The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth, from Folks Road to the intersection with Wakarusa Drive, is closed for extension of an existing right-turn lane. Traffic headed north on Wakarusa, from just south of Sixth to a point just south of Overland Drive, also is getting squeezed to make way for a right-turn lane being added north of Sixth. Work is planned to be finished by month’s end.

• Traffic adjustments remain in place to accommodate construction of The Oread at the northern edge of Kansas University’s main campus. These restrictions are scheduled to continue into spring: 12th Street, closed to westbound traffic from west of Louisiana Street to Indiana Street; Indiana, closed to traffic from 12th to a half-block north; and Oread Avenue, restricted to local traffic only from 12th to 13th streets.

Kansas Highway 10

• Bridge and guardrail repairs will close the left lane for traffic headed west on Kansas Highway 10, from Mill Creek to Woodland Road in Johnson County. The closure is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Interstate 35

• Work to repair drains will close the left lane for traffic headed north on I-35, from the U.S. Highway 69 entrance ramp to 75th Street in Johnson County. The lane closure is set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

U.S. Highway 56

• Lanes of U.S. Highway 56 will be closed intermittently, from I-35 to State Line Road, to accommodate pavement repairs. The closures are expected between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Interstate 435

• Bridge work is set to squeeze traffic on I-435 into one lane in each direction at U.S. Highway 69 in Johnson County. Plans call for lanes to begin closing beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, and for all lanes to be open once again by 5 a.m. Tuesday.
