Jayhawks’ rally falls just short

? Kansas University’s women’s basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit, but the Jayhawks eventually fell to Colorado, 69-62, on Wednesday at Coors Events Center.

KU (13-11 overall, 2-9 Big 12) got off to a lousy start, scoring just two points in the first five minutes.

The Jayhawks trailed by as many as 12 before rallying within a point at 23-22. They trailed, 31-28, at the half.

Kansas tied it at 42 and took its first lead at 50-48 on a three-pointer by Nicollette Smith with 8:53 to play. The Jayhawks led by as many as four several times before CU (11-12, 3-8) took the lead for good at 62-60 on a pair of free throws by Kara Richards with 1:33 to go.

Colorado hit seven of nine free throws down the stretch to hold off the Jayhawks.

Smith led the Jayhawks with 15 points. Krysten Boogaard chipped in 13 points, Danielle McCray added 11 and Sade Morris contributed 10.

LaChelda Jacobs led the Jayhawks with a career-high 10 rebounds.

Kansas will play host to Iowa State on Sunday.

Tipoff will be noon at Allen Fieldhouse.
