When the going gets tough, the tough get …

Forget that old bromide.

When the going gets tough for Lawrence High’s boys basketball team, Dorian Green gets going.

Green scored 13 of his game-high 27 points in the last 61?2 minutes as the Lions ran away from Olathe North, 67-47, on Tuesday night in the LHS gym.

Hard to believe based on the final score, but Lawrence led by just seven points a minute and a half into the fourth quarter.

At the time, the Eagles owned the momentum, too, so Lawrence coach Chris Davis called a full timeout.

“Coach told us don’t let it slip away,” Green said. “We need every win bad for sub-state (seedings).”

So Green basically took over and, with about four minutes remaining, a critical juncture occurred when O-North’s Trey Walker yanked Green to the floor during a loose-ball scrum under the basket.

Obviously peeved, Green jumped to his feet and had to be restrained by a teammate. Then, just moments later, Green was stunned to learn the officials had classified the infraction as a common foul.

“Yeah, I thought it was intentional,” Green said, “but they didn’t call it.”

How did Green respond? He grabbed the inbounds pass, raced down the floor, flashed into the middle of the lane, knifed through a pair of defenders, caressed the ball into the basket, was fouled and drained the charity.

That was the turning point. Green’s conventional three-point play boosted the Lions’ lead to 59-43 and the Eagles never threatened again.

“I kinda just flipped a switch,” Green said of that incident.

But he quickly added that it wasn’t just him, that his teammates had run the fast break to perfection and “I just finished.”

Coach Davis agreed Green’s “payback” play was the turning point, but he stressed that the Eagles’ Walker — who apologized after the game, incidentally — hadn’t committed an intentional foul.

“It was just a really hard foul,” Davis said. “That’s the way Olathe North plays. They’re an aggressive team.”

They’re also a poor shooting team. The Eagles made only 17 of 64 shots for 26.6 percent while the Lions cashed 22 of 50 for 44 percent.

Green led the Lions (9-8 overall, 4-4 Sunflower League) with the 27 points. Fellow seniors Robbie Wright and Lance Kilburn added 16 and 10, respectively.
