Despite failing to make a field goal in the fourth quarter, the Shawnee Mission West girls basketball team was able to overcome a double-digit second-half deficit to top Lawrence High, 48-44.

Vikings guard Lizzy Jeronimus scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second half to spur a Shawnee Mission West comeback victory that dropped the Lions to 7-9.

“Jeronimus killed us,” Lawrence High coach Kristin Mallory said. “She was like a bull in a china shop tonight.”

The Lions opened the game on a 17-8 run and led by as many as 10 in the second half. But late-game foul trouble and the play of Jeronimus and teammate Brooke Katterhenry allowed the Vikings to close the gap slowly.

Trailing, 41-36, with less than four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Vikings rattled off a 9-0 run to take their first lead with 3:19 remaining. They led the rest of the way.

“We fell apart in the fourth quarter,” said Mallory, whose team will take on Olathe North on Tuesday at LHS. “We stopped doing the things that were working. We just didn’t shut the door when we had the chance.”

Taylor Bird led LHS with 18 points and eight rebounds.
