Floral deliveries to benefit Habitat

Members of Lawrence Habitat WomenBuild will be making floral deliveries Friday and Saturday — Valentine’s Day — for Owens Flower Shop, 846 Ind.

Owens will be donating $4.50 from each delivery to WomenBuild, which is trying to raise money to begin construction in May on a new house. About 40 WomenBuild volunteers will work in pairs making the deliveries.

Other fundraisers for the $90,000 project will be in the future, said Paulette Schwerdt, a WomenBuild steering committee member. Mostly women volunteers will build the house for Carol Brown, mother of two children and a longtime Lawrence resident. She also will work up to 250 hours on the project.

Brown’s house will be a “green project,” with materials used that will protect the environment and be recyclable, Schwerdt said.

WomenBuild is part of Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, and encourages and empowers women to take action and helps make home ownership a reality for qualifying families.
