Campfires, brush burning and other outdoor burning are banned in unincorporated areas of Douglas County through Friday, Feb. 13, emergency officials have announced.

“Douglas County has imposed restrictions on outdoor burning due to the lack of rain and low moisture content in the soil,” a Douglas County Emergency Management news release said.

The ban prohibits open fires and the burning of all fence rows, fields, wild lands, ravines, trash, debris or other materials, the release said. Fires in permanent stoves, fireplaces or in barbecue grills are allowed, as long as they are at homes or developed recreational sites.

The careless use and disposal of smoking materials is also prohibited under the ban.

“All smoldering remains must be discarded in inflammable containers and in a manner to reduce the potential for fires,” the county said.

Douglas County’s burn ban may be extended after Feb. 13, officials said.

Outdoor burning is prohibited in the city of Lawrence at all times, said Jillian Blair, assistant emergency management director.
