Portable gifts

To the editor:

The Christmas edition (Pulse, Dec. 25) quoted someone repeating the story of how if there were three wise women, they would have brought soup and diapers. It’s a cute story, and I don’t want to seem a spoilsport. But Luke tells us that the night the wise men left, Joseph and Mary had to pack up to run to Egypt ahead of Herod’s death squads that would kill the child.

If you were going to be homeless, a refugee in a land where you didn’t speak the language, a land not always hospitable to your people, wouldn’t you be grateful for some valuable, portable and easily salable resources to carry with you?

Perhaps this time of year we should think more of other families, homeless and strangers to us from other countries, people who may not speak our language, people like the Holy Family.
