Depot Redux chairwoman honored

Carey Maynard-Moody, chairwoman of Depot Redux, has been selected as one of eight “2009 Distinguished Kansans” by the Topeka Capital-Journal. The paper cited Maynard-Moody for her accomplishments in preserving and improving Lawrence’s Amtrak passenger station at Seventh and New Jersey streets.

The historic Lawrence depot, built in 1955 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, is an example of mid-century modern architecture in the area. It has been declared eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Since its formation in 2008, Depot Redux has worked to beautify the station through volunteer cleanup days, and to staff the building for train arrivals and departures. During the summer months, Depot Redux sponsored “On-Time Performances” at the station. The group is also working with Amtrak, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (the building’s owner), and the city of Lawrence to obtain public ownership of the building.
