A lineup of social media experts will be in Lawrence this spring as part of a national social media conference.

Leaders with The World Company — the parent company of the Journal-World and Sunflower Broadband — announced that Lawrence will play host to the inaugural Free State Social on April 29-30 at The Oread hotel, 12th Street and Oread Boulevard.

“The Free State Social will highlight the best in social media from our area and put local innovations and ideas on a national, even global, stage,” said Ben Smith, The World Company’s social media manager. “Our purpose is to educate attendees about the current state of social media, present opportunities for its use and talk about where the industry is headed.”

Chris Brogan, president of New Marketing Labs and author of the book “Trust Agents,” will be one of the featured speakers of the event.

“The good stuff is happening in the heart of America,” Brogan said. “It’s not just New York and L.A. that know what media can do for business.”

Other featured speakers include:

• Jeremiah Owyang, a partner at the Altimeter Group, a social media research and advisory firm.

• Ellyn Angelotti, editor of Poynter Online and an adjunct faculty member at the institute who teaches innovations in multimedia development and social networking. Angelotti is also serving as a professional-in-residence at Kansas University.

• Shawna Coronado, a book author, newspaper columnist and environmental and health correspondent who has used social media to promote her career.

• Sarah Evans, a public relations and new media consultant at Sevans Strategy.
