Massachusetts Street downtown was shut down around 1:40 p.m. Thursday while Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews investigated a smoke smell coming from a downtown business.

Crews were going through individual rooms at 813 Massachusetts St., home of Shark’s Surf Shop, to find the source of the smoke smell.

Fire investigators determined a furnace motor had overheated, said Mark Bradford, fire chief. There was no damage and the furnace was turned off.

The street was shut down between 8th and 9th streets during the investigation, but has since opened.
