Different Vespers

To the editor:

Everyone views things through their own eyes and they base opinions on their own experiences.

Vespers, by definition, is an evening church service observed mainly by Western Christian churches. Older generations remember the KU Vespers as a program of religious music by the Kansas University orchestra and choral groups. The art and drama departments added to the music and scenes of a religious nature.

For those who remember Vespers this way, it is hard to accept the version of Vespers now presented. Since KU has become a more diverse university, the politically correct addition of Kwanzaa with its more lively music is acceptable to some but not to others who are expecting the more traditional Vespers.

I, too, was a participant in the earlier Vespers and can appreciate the talent and performance of those involved in the present Vespers. I stopped going to Vespers ten years ago when it became apparent it was not the Vespers I was expecting. To each his own.
