The Structural Biology Center on KU's West Campus, which will be named after former Chancellor Del Shankel.

? Former Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway was designated chancellor emeritus at KU on Thursday by the Kansas Board of Regents.

The regents also approved naming the Structural Biology Center on West Campus after another former KU chancellor, Delbert Shankel.

Both were praised by regents members.

Regent Dan Lykins said Hemenway was a gentleman and personified “true grace.”

Regent Chair Jill Docking said Shankel “is as fine a public servant as you can get.”

Hemenway was chancellor for 14 years before stepping down earlier this year. He went on sabbatical leave, during which he said he planned to work on a book about intercollegiate athletics and American values.

Shankel has already been designated chancellor emeritus and professor emeritus of microbiology in honor of his 50 years in teaching and service to KU.
