Wichita ? A Wichita man who admitted killing a woman in what police called a dispute over parking has been sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison.

Twenty-eight-year-old Albert Thomas smiled and waved to his family after hearing the sentence Thursday in Sedgwick County District Court.

Thomas pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Deshonda Walker. The sentence was the maximum allowed under the plea deal.

Walker was shot to death in July 2008 while sitting in a car outside her grandmother’s house.

Wichita police said the shooting followed an argument over parking.

But the victim’s family says Thomas was angry because Walker had rejected his affections.

The victim’s mother, Teresa Walker, says Thomas should have been given a life sentence.
