LHS girls turn up ‘D,’ hold off Helias, 41-35

? Haley Parker scored 13 points and the Lawrence High girls basketball team turned up the defensive pressure in a 41-35 victory over Jefferson City (Mo.) Helias on Thursday in the first round of the Saints Classic.

The Lions will face Overland Park Aquinas at 6:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

“We challenged them at halftime to turn up the defensive pressure and it ended up being the difference in the game,” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “We told them, guard them like you don’t want to be guarded.”

Tamiya Green added six points for Lawrence, while Cassie Potter and Jasmyn Turner pitched in five apiece. The Lions improved to 1-1.
