To the editor:

My husband and I were very disappointed after returning from Hays this weekend and eagerly opening the Journal-World to read the high school football championship news. Unless we totally missed it, we did not find it in the Sports section or online.

We attended the Smith Center/Centralia game for Class 2A/1A. Smith Center entered the game with the longest 11-man winning streak in the nation at 79 games. Even though my husband graduated from Smith Center and has most of his family still living there, big congratulations go to Centralia, home of former Kansas University great John Riggins, for a well played game! They won 20-12 in overtime. On top of that, this was their first championship, ever.

Another reason I was surprised this game was not mentioned was because Joe Drape, The New York Times columnist, had stayed in Smith Center for almost a year to write a book, “Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen.” Your newspaper ran an article about it on Aug. 16. Joe came back from New York with his family to attend the game.

We also would have liked to have seen the other high school results since we knew families from several of the towns in the other class state championships and would like to know if that would be possible to include for upcoming state championship games. We are not from the Lawrence area, and feel there are others who would agree with our sentiments.

That is the neat thing about these 1-2a schools, they have approx. 100% participation in their programs and no cry babbies. Like you do in lawrence, no politics, no one that gets their hair cut by the coaches wife ... LOL You guys don't know what good foot ball is , so bite me..

Cindy, I don't know why you seemed so surprised about this. The LJWorld rarely reports on the small schools on the perimeter of Lawrence, i.e. Baldwin, Tongie, Perry, yet you expect them to report on schools hours away. The only time they care about the small towns in this area is on monthly collection day. If you want good sports coverage on a statewide basis, read the Topeka paper.

Cindy,

You were at the game and saw it all. Why do you feel the need to complain about the LJW's lack of coverage/mention in its paper.....let alone write to the editor about it? You had the best seat in the house and saw what you wanted to see. Although, I can understand if you wanted to see what coaches and players had to say after the game, get their thoughts, etc.

You win 79 games in a row, you just might know a little about coaching football....you don't get good players every year, so you learn to coach what you have...great job coach! Great job Centralia!

It has become apparent in the last few years that the LJWorld is mostly interested in reporting Free State first, then LHS and the smaller private schools in Lawrence as second choices. They do seem to give some coverage to Eudora but the coverage on Baldwin has dropped way off. Still not sure why they report on DeSoto.... Sorry to Smith Center and Centraila. I do say congrats on your seasons though.

The LJW only reports what they want to report. It definitely isn't the best newspaper around. If it isn't Lawrence High or FSHS basketball, football, or baseball, then it most likely won't get great coverage.

Olathe North is not west of Lawrence. It's the end of the Fall Sports Season, Championship Day in Kansas for High School Football. Seems to me a little write up about EACH game would not be to much to ask, if you want to think of yourself as a large newspaper company.

For those who follow Kansas high school football, the Smith Center-Centralia result was very big news. Comments such as "Get lost" and "Yawn" are made by people who are simply ignorant. On the other hand, those who do follow high school football probably knew the result already. It was a real shocker. Hats off to Smith Center and Coach Barta for putting together the great winning streak they did, and congratulations to Centralia on the win of a lifetime.

I always wonder if some of these commenters are being punished and forced to read these articles. Otherwise, their complaining wouldn't merit a response.

Cindy, it is just the typical Lawrence attitude that Western Kansas starts just west of Wakarusa street. I'd put my money on either of those 1A/2A schools beating Lawrence High this year. No offense to Coach Wedd and the players. Yes, there is a big difference between 6A and 1A/2A, but I guarantee you there were players in that game at Hays who would have made the Lions better this year.

Sure. The Lawrence newspaper needs to report the tournament results of random 2A/1A schools. Get lost.
