Fish, environment
To the editor:
This letter is in response to the article “Frozen fish better for the environment” in the Nov. 28 Journal-World. The article addresses the environmental cost of flying fresh salmon to markets in contrast to freezing them at sea and then shipping them in containers. The latter, the article says, is better for the environment.
This makes a lot of sense. But the article takes a wrong turn at its conclusion with the assertion that if container shipping is the environmentally sound choice then this “counters the notion that buying ‘local’ food is best for the environment.” All other things being equal, buying local is best for the environment, but there is no local salmon in most of the country. Assuming that the bulk of the article is correct, salmon-eating inlanders who are trying to be kind to the environment should buy container-shipped fish and buy local produce and other products when they are available.
